Japan Fashion Week
Japan Fashion Week
WONG: Japan starts the week with a fashion show extravaganza, featuring many young and upcoming Japanese designers. Let's have a look at their latest 2009 spring/summer collection. STORY: It's Tokyo's fashion week. More than 40 brands, including ten newcomers will be shown this season. One of the first designers to hit the catwalk is Mikio Sakabe. He and his Taiwanese co-designer have built their brand image based on the futuristic pop culture in Tokyo. Their latest summer resort-themed collection includes a line-up of women's wear using nylons and cellophane-woven fabrics. [Mikio Sakabe, Fashion Designer]: "My intention was to make new Japanese fabrics look elegant. Japanese fabrics are interesting, but they look sportive and inorganic. I wanted to change that and make them more emotional so I also incorporated the resort theme." Three years ago Japan's fashion industry began to stage a fashion week twice a year in a joint effort with the government. Their goal is to dress up Tokyo's image as a global style capital. [Mikio Sakabe, Fashion Designer]: "Japan Fashion Week has a potential to get really interesting. It still needs some work, but I'm really looking forward to it since more new designers will come out in the future." Designer, Eri Utsugi, also reveals the latest collection of her brand "Mercibeaucoup". Utsugi started her own label three years ago. Now it has grown into one of Japan's most popular brands. [Eri Utsugi, Fashion Designer]: "I was inspired by water ...

Japanese Car Design Looks to the Future
Japanese Car Design Looks to the Future
Japan Car - now on exhibit at the London Science Museum is not your average automobile show. Spectators should be prepared for an innovative encounter with the future of lifestyle and transport. When their proposal for a design museum in Tokyo was turned down, architect Shigeru Ban and designer Kenya Hara came up with the idea of a yearly show which would change in theme and location. The exhibit Japan Car is a fresh statement of how the Japanese consider the interior of the vehicle as a living space. [Shigeru Ban, Architect and Show Creator]: "Cars in Europe are designed as pure transportation means to go from one place to one place as quickly as possible. Instead, we just try to enjoy inside so that is the very different aspect of how car inside, also the space itself and design as a reflection of lifestyle." The Toyota Bb, for example, was designed as a private hideout with an 11-speaker sound system and front seat cushions that can be lowered out of sight from outside viewers. Proving that good things come in small packages, Japanese car manufacturers are also paying attention to environment with climate-conscious hybrids that are more like integrated systems than individual cells. Shigeru says that efficient public transportation in Japan is driving car sales down and that carmakers need to come up with special cars to meet the challenge. [Shigeru Ban, Architect and Show Creator]: "I think it's a very important moment for Japanese manufacturers. The competition is ...

Troy Lee Designs/Rizla Suzuki Bautista Shoei Helmet
Troy Lee Designs/Rizla Suzuki Bautista Shoei Helmet
Troy Lee Designs and Rizla Suzuki's Álvaro Bautista are showing their support for the recent tragedy in Japan by holding an auction for one of the custom painted Shoei helmets worn by Alvaro Bautista during the USGP races in Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society to aid in the relief efforts. This beautiful paint-scheme has been created by Troy Lee Designs' Japanese designer Maki Ushiroyama and features all the flags of the fourteen countries on the MotoGP calendar, with pride of place going to the Japanese 'Nisshōki' or 'Hinomaru' -- as it is more commonly known -- on the top of the helmet. The colors of all nations is to represent the global support for Japan following the tragedy in March and an added message in Japanese translates as 'Ganbare Nippon', which literally means 'Cheer up Japan, do your best and don't give up!' This is the actual helmet worn and raced in by Team Rizla Suzuki rider, Álvaro Bautista, and features some road rash after low-siding his Suzuki GSV-R while battling for a top six finish. The helmet is personally signed by Álvaro Bautista and Troy Lee. Because the helmet was worn by Álvaro at Laguna Seca, where he crashed out of the race, there is visible damage to the shell. The helmet should only be used for display, not to be worn as protection for motorcycle riding, since the integrity is now compromised.

Dearest our friends in the world, As you may already have known, Japan was hit by the largest earthquake ever recorded on Friday, March 11th. The huge quake and devastating tsunami has left the overwhelming damage to the country and we are still facing this terrifying conditions. As I have received the message from all over the world, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation for your warmest concerns. This is the time for us to think what we can really do. I have thought what I could do now, at this moment. I believe that there would be more than just watching the situation of this disaster on television to help the lives of people there. I know I am not in place to ask such thing, yet one of the thing that we can do for the people in the afflicted area is to donate for their relief and recovery. There are babies in need of milk, people who has lost their families, and houses. Here are links to the donation for the relief and recovery of the Japanese earthquake and Pacific tsunami afflicted region Japan Red Cross Society: www.jrc.or.jp American Red Cross: american.redcross.org We truly appreciate your support, even the very small support from your pocket, for the relief and recovery of my country.
